Scheherazade: This story was the first one among the Part A
reading. It is truly important because it shows how ruthless the Sultan was but
also portrays how Scheherazade was different than the rest of the women. She
was able to delay her death by starting an unfinished story to the Sultan and
that kept him from executing her the next morning as he would normally do.
The Story of the Merchant and the genius: This story adds on
to the unique character of Scheherazade from the first story. She was able to
manipulate the sultan by adding characters to allow her to last another night.
She ran about her day as she usually would do so and then when time came, she
knew what details to add in order to make the Sultan more curious and allow her
to live for another night.
The Story of the First old man and the Hind: In this story,
not only is Scheherazade fooling the Sultan but she also bought her sister into
it. She is introducing a new character that is part of a story that is told by
the three previous characters. She is very cunning with the way she is
elongating the story and keeping her audience always curious.
The Story of the Second Old man and The Two Black Dogs: In
this story, I feel out of desperation Scheherazade includes a character that
resembles herself in this situation. A man is need of mercy and is asking the
genie to spare his life for him. The way Scheherazade asked that, she was able
to manipulate the Sultan into sub consciously feeling as powerful as the genie.
As she ends the story, she is honest towards the Sultan and tells him that she
does not know the story ending however it leads to another story that is also
very interesting. Here the Sultan was intrigued and allowed her to live for
another day but I feel like she was able to manipulate him into not only believing
her story but starting getting attached to them also.
